Care4 Breast Cancer 5k 2018

I've kept my story somewhat private but am ready to share now. In February I went in for my first ever mammogram. I was called back immediately for a repeat mammogram, biopsy, and mri. These results led to the unfortunate diagnosis of stage zero breast cancer. Stage zero meant it had not spread, and was 99% treatable with surgery. The week of my surgery my niece, Katherine, also fighting breast cancer, informed me she would probably not survive the week and was leaving behind a loving family incluing an amazing husband and sweet little daughter. My mother-in-law,Lois, had lost her life 10 years ago to breast and ovarian cancer. I decided I neeed to beat this, as soon as possible, and not have the daily worry of it coming back. I want to be here for my family. I chose a very aggressive treatment in April and had a double mastectomy with follow up surgery mid August. I am cured. The last 4 months have been a challenge, but I've had so much support and love from family, friends, neighbors and many more. I chose our team name KatStrong as Katherine Ryan gave me all my strength to make the decisions I did, and I know she and Grandma Lois are up there as my angels watching down on me an helping me stay strong. Joe, Josh, Haley, Chloe and I will be out there walking to help raise money for local women in McHenry Co. to get testing and treatment they need. Get your mammogram or tell your loved one to please go get their mammogram. I was scared for my first one, but it saved my life. If I had put it off a few more years my diagnosis could have been much worse. Much love to you all and join our team to walk or run with us! #KatStrong
